Global club sounds are the antidote to the old-fashioned view of ‘world music’. They shake up traditions, they’re irreverent rather than earnest and, at their best, they make progressive new connections. Lisbon-based collective Buraka Som Sistema are acclaimed for their electronic take on Afro-Latin ‘kuduro’ grooves; they’re dynamic live performers and their nightlife energy translates thrillingly to this second studio album. Komba takes its name from an Angolan wake ritual, and blends urgent, hypnotic rhythms with party guests, notably Afrikan Boy on Eskeleto (‘Look into my eyes/Can’t you see I am a demon?’). There are parallels with Radioclit/The Very Best, MIA and Diplo and these are intrepid dance beats with no signs of stopping.
