BMW bosses have denied that a successor to the legendary M1 supercar is in the works, but a new report is indicating the brand is planning a revival for 2016. Auto Bild says the supercar will feature a lightweight body
that is constructed from aluminum, magnesium, titanium and plastic.
This could enable the model to tip the scales at just 1250 kg (2,756
lbs). Power would be provided by a turbocharged V8 engine with 600 PS (441
KW / 592 hp) to 650 PS (478 kW / 641 hp). This would reportedly enable
the model to hit a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). Despite the
impressive performance, the M1 successor would be relatively economical
thanks to an engine start / stop system and brake energy regeneration. The original M1
was a joint venture between different companies, BMW developed and
engineered the technical components. The body was designed by Giorgio
Giugiaro of ItalDesign. The first BMW with the now famous “M” in its
name was launched in late 1978. With a top speed of 265km/h it was the
fastest road-going car built in Germany. The M1 accelerated from
standstill to 100km/h in less than six seconds, and a sprint to 200km/h
took a mere 20 seconds.
