The Porsche 918 Spyder is due to hit roads late next year with
production to start at the end of September 2013. Today, Porsche dropped
some nice photos of the 918 Spyder prototype along with some
interesting details. “What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun,
efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive
Board Research and Development of Porsche AG. While the prototypes are wearing some camouflage (influenced by
Porsche 917 racing cars), most of the design shows of the final touches
to the 918 Spyder. Porsche said that as of right now, the engineers and
designers are focused on ‘the highly sophisticated individual drive
components.’ The Porsche 918 Spyder, like the concept, features a combustion
engine and two independent electric-motors – one on the front axle and
one in the drive line for the rear wheels. “They are therefore a critical component in this vehicle into which
we have put all of our expertise and capacity for innovation,” said
Hatz. These operating strategies and the development of the software to
go with them are one of Porsche’s core competences.” Porsche said that when it’s all said and done, the 918 Spyder should
pump out 770-hp with a 0 to 62 mph time of 3.2 seconds with a top speed
of more than 200 mph. Fuel-economy should come in around 3 liters/100km
or 78.4 mpg US. Deliveries will
start by the end of 2013 and the model will cost 655,000 euros without
taxes.
