The Ferrari SP EC built for Eric Clapton has officially been released following the leaked footage seen of the car back in March. Based on the Ferrari 458 Italia, the SP EC (for Eric Clapton) is a unique Ferrari
inspired by Clapton’s favourite Ferrari the Ferrari 512 BB of the
1970s. Designed by the Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with
Pininfarina and Ferrari’s engineers, the SP12 EC was created
specifically for the guitarist and long-time Ferrari owner. Clapton said the experience of following the project through from
what was, essentially, a blank canvas, was “one of the most satisfying
things I’ve ever done.” Despite the 66-year-old three-time Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame
inductee paying a believed £3 million ($4.7million) for the car,
engineers were unable to fit the SP12 EC with his desired V12 engine –
to replicate the original 512BB’s powerplant – due to structural
limitations, leaving the Englishman to be content with the 425kW/540Nm
4.5-litre V8 from the 458 Italia. Clapton has previously owned a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, Ferrari Enzo, and 599 Fiorano.
