Montblanc 2012 Writers Edition: Jonathan Swift

Every year since 1992, Montblanc pays tribute to great writers whose works have become part of world literature, with the creation of a new Limited Writers Edition. The Writers Edition 2012 is dedicated to British-Irish writer Jonathan Swift: writer, poet and essayist, and creator of the satiric masterpiece: “Gulliver’s Travels” The overall design of the pen draws inspiration from “Gulliver’s Travels”, and in particular the Lilliput episode, Gulliver’s first voyage. The barrel is made of black lacquer and decorated with multilayered inlays reminiscent of the ropes that were used to bind Gulliver at the beach of Lilliput island. The cap is made of precious black resin, and shaped like Gulliver’s tricorn – a typical tradesman three-cornered hat popular in the 18th century. It bears the signature of Jonathan Swift. A platinum-plated clip depicts the staircase the mayor of Lilliput had to climb to be able to talk to Gulliver. Finally, the instrument’s delicately designed rhodium-plated 18K gold nib is decorated with an elaborate engraving showing the imperial army of Lilliput marching between Gulliver’s legs. The Writers Edition Jonathan Swift is only available in a strictly limited edition worldwide, with an issue number engraved on the cap as a guarantee of its uniqueness. The Writers Edition is available in Fountain pen, Rollerball, Ballpoint Pen and Mechanical Pencil (set only) from August 2012 in Montblanc boutiques worldwide.

Eric Clapton's $4.7 Million Ferrari Is Officially Unveiled

The Ferrari SP EC built for Eric Clapton has officially been released following the leaked footage seen of the car back in March. Based on the Ferrari 458 Italia, the SP EC (for Eric Clapton) is a unique Ferrari inspired by Clapton’s favourite Ferrari the Ferrari 512 BB of the 1970s. Designed by the Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with Pininfarina and Ferrari’s engineers, the SP12 EC was created specifically for the guitarist and long-time Ferrari owner. Clapton said the experience of following the project through from what was, essentially, a blank canvas, was “one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done.” Despite the 66-year-old three-time Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee paying a believed £3 million ($4.7million) for the car, engineers were unable to fit the SP12 EC with his desired V12 engine – to replicate the original 512BB’s powerplant – due to structural limitations, leaving the Englishman to be content with the 425kW/540Nm 4.5-litre V8 from the 458 Italia. Clapton has previously owned a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, Ferrari Enzo, and 599 Fiorano.

Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim Reveals Plot Description

The plot description for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has been revealed. The epic sci-fi was known to be an action adventure about humans operating giant robots to fight destructive monsters. Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam leads, along with Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. Other cast members include Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. A press release was leaked earlier this week, and now Collider have confirmed this is the official synopsis for Travis Beacham's script. It reveals the giant robots are named Jaegers, and that the monsters - Kaiju - emerged from the ocean: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Del Toro will be working with his Oscar-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro once more, following the stunning Pan's Labyrinth. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will release Pacific Rim the summer of 2013.

Michael Haneke’s "Amour" Takes Palme D'Or At Cannes

Michael Haneke has won the Cannes Film Festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or, for a second time with his stark film about love and death, Amour. The Austrian director's powerful and understated film stars two French acting icons - 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva and 81-year-old Jean-Louis Trintignant - as an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health. Haneke previously won the Palme in 2009 for The White Ribbon, and is the seventh director to take the top prize twice. The festival jury awarded the second-place Grand Prize to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire Reality, while Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy The Angels' Share won the third-place Jury Prize. Carlos Reygadas was named best director for his surrealism-tinged story of a Mexican family, Post Tenebras Lux. The best actor prize went to Mads Mikkelsen as a man ostracised by his small-town community when he is accused of child abuse in The Hunt. Best actress was won jointly by Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for Romanian movie Beyond the Hills. Cristian Mungiu's drama of love and faith in a remote Romanian monastery also won the award for best screenplay. The prize winners were chosen by a jury, led by Italian director Nanni Moretti, that included actors Ewan McGregor and Diane Kruger, director Alexander Payne and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. Moretti revealed that none of the winners had been a unanimous choice. The 12-day festival has seen plenty of glamour, with the likes of Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Brad Pitt, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appearing both on-screen and on the red carpet. Despite a strong American flavor to the festival, US films were shut out apart from Benh Zeitli's Beasts of the Southern Wild, which won the Camera d'Or for best first film. The jury overlooked Pitt, who plays a cynical mob enforcer in Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly, and Kidman as a Southern femme fatale in Lee Daniels' The Paperboy. Other much-praised performances at the festival included Marion Cotillard's tragedy-struck killer-whale trainer in Rust and Bone, newcomer Paul Brannigan's scrappy Glasgow lad in The Angels' Share, and Denis Lavant as a performer who takes on a host of bizarre personas in Holy Motors. The festival wrapped up on Sunday in the French Riviera resort.

BMW Zagato Coupe Unveiled

This striking BMW Zagato Coupe has been revealed at the prestigious Villa d’Este Concours in Italy. Designed in collaboration with Zagato, the Zagato Coupe is a unique take on the idea of a BMW two-seater built for sport and style. It's not just a raw rolling shell, either: BMW has already put the Zagato Coupe through its paces in high-speed testing. The idea behind the Zagato Coupe was a "vmax concept," built to embody high-speed aerodynamics in a road-legal form. A very long hood, rearward cabin, and Kamm tail give the Zagato Coupe classic proportions, while the details are pure future-modern. As Zagato chief designer Norihiko Harada puts it, "For me, the BMW Zagato Coupé holds a very special magic. It exudes a certain spontaneity which, when combined with the type of unconventional solutions typical of Zagato, lend the car a very individual elegance." It's unlikely the Zagato Coupe will ever see production, however, even in limited volumes. Like the M1 Hommage of 2008 or the 328 Hommage of 2011, the Zagato Coupe is a one-off, intended to express BMW themes as seen through the Italian design house's eyes.

Wingman Gary Connery Completes 2400ft Jump Without Parachute

British stuntman Gary Connery has made daredevil history by leaping from a helicopter at 2,400ft (730m) without a parachute and landing safely on top of almost 19,000 cardboard boxes. The 42-year-old father-of-two said it was an 'amazing feeling' to become the first person to make such a jump from such a height and land safely. The flight, which was delayed by several hours for 'perfect' weather conditions, took around a minute. 'I feel absolutely wonderful, I am overwhelmed,' Mr Connery, who has made 880 skydives and 450 base jumps and appeared in the Harry Potter films and Die Another Day, said after landing in Ridge Wood in Buckinghamshire. 'I am in a strange zone at the moment. It is an amazing feeling. I feel incredible, just completely elated.' Mr Connery continued: 'I am so choked with the turnout. It was so comfortable and so soft. I got my calculations absolutely right. There was some turbulence.' He added: 'I have been training and planning for this record attempt for many years now and I am so proud to have achieved a world first." 'I want to thank everyone involved for their support and belief in me because this really has been a team effort.' His wife Vivienne commented: 'I am just so relieved it is all over.' Mr Connery was expected to drop for three seconds before traveling at 80mph in his wingsuit before slowing down to a gliding speed of 50mph and finally a falling speed of 15mph in the seconds before his landing.

Zach Galifianakis To Star In "A Confederacy of Dunces," Report Says

Zach Galifianakis could be taking on the role of Ignatius J. Reilly in a feature-film version of A Confederacy of Dunces. Vulture is reporting that the project is back on track with The Muppets director James Bobin now at the helm. Said to be set up at Paramount Pictures, Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids) will provide the adapted screenplay based on John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a slovenly 30-something who, living with mother, sets out to find a job in New Orlean's French Quarter. Thinking himself a highly-educated genius, Reilly's quixotic nature serves as a sharp contrast to the various souls he encounters. The acclaimed novel was published in 1980, more than a decade after the death of the author. Suffering from depression, Toole committed suicide in 1969 but, thanks to the determined work of his mother, his manuscript found its way into the hands of author Walker Percy, who was instrumental in bringing Toole's book to print. Galifianakis has, for years, been a fan-favorite for the role but, despite efforts on the parts of many filmmakers (including, most recently, Steven Soderbergh) a film version of Dunces has failed to make it into production.

A-Trak & Dillon Francis - "Money Makin'" (New Video)

"Money Makin'" is the new collab from A-Trak and Dillon Francis, out now on Fool's Gold. Directed by Ben Solomon and Daniel B Levin, and featuring cameos from P-Thugg of Chromeo, rap legend Greg Nice, Action Bronson and more, "Money Makin'" is yet another must-see FG music video, and the perfect kick-off to summer jam season.
