Past Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogs have contained vehicles as varied as the retro-mod dud of a Thunderbird, the Jaguar XJL Supercharged, and the Camaro SS convertible. Pulling product from across the pond after last year’s bowtie adventure, this year’s book will contain the Ferrari FF—a special-edition FF, of course. The stuff? A unique shade of gray called Grigio Caldo, a numbered plaque, and a matched set of luggage crafted from semi-aniline leather. The interior of the car is upholstered to match said luggage. Included in the purchase price is enrollment in the 2012 Ferrari Winter Driving Experience in Aspen, Colorado. Not included: the dog. All this can be yours for the price of $395,000 plus tax. The real question here is why? As opulent as Neiman’s offerings are, there’s always been a tacky whiff about the brand. Ferrari has been a lot of things in the past few decades, but it has thankfully backed off the gaudy self-parody since the 348 left production. Is it a semi-desperate plea for sales? Has Luca di Montezemolo never been to Dallas? What’s next? An Italianate “Madman Muntz” impression? Oh well, at the very least, the Ferrari doesn’t have some ill-advised Mistral script on the fender. After all, it can’t be 1988 forever, can it?
