Priceless Tibetan Buddha Statue Looted By Nazis Was Carved From Meteorite
A thousand-year-old Buddhist statue taken from Tibet in 1938 by an SS
team seeking the roots of Hitler's Aryan doctrine was carved from a
meteorite, scientists reported on Wednesday. In a paper published
in an academic journal, German and Austrian researchers recount an
extraordinary tale where archaeology, the Third Reich and cosmic
treasure are intertwined like an Indiana Jones movie. Called the
"Iron Man" because of the high content of iron in its rock, the
24-centimetre (10-inch) -high statue was brought to Germany by an
expedition led by Ernst Schaefer, a zoologist and ethnologist. Backed
by SS chief Heinrich Himmler and heading a team whose members are all
believed to have been SS, Schaefer roamed Tibet in 1938-9 to search for
the origins of Aryanism, the notion of racial superiority that
underpinned Nazism. Weighing 10.6 kilos (23.3 pounds), the statue
features the Buddhist god Vaisravana seated, with the palm of his right
hand outstretched and pointing downwards. Chemical analysis shows that the rock from which it was carved came from a meteorite. The
rock survived a long trip through the Solar System and the destructive
friction with the atmosphere when it collided with Earth. It is a
particularly rare kind of meteorite called an ataxite, which has iron
and high contents of nickel, according to the study, published in the
journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science. "The statue was
chiseled from an iron meteorite, from a fragment of the Chinga meteorite
which crashed into the border areas between Mongolia and Siberia about
15,000 years ago," said investigator Elmar Buchner of Stuttgart
University. "While the first debris was officially discovered in
1913 by gold prospectors, we believe that this individual meteorite
fragment was collected many centuries before." The exact dating of
the carving cannot be established accurately, but its style links it to
the pre-Buddhist Bon culture of the 11th century. Vaisravana was the Buddhist god-king of the North, also known as Jambhala in Tibet. How
Schaefer came across the statue is unclear, but the big appeal is
likely to have been a large swastika, symbolising good fortune in
Buddhism, carved on its chest. Once the statue arrived in Munich,
it became part of a private collection and only became available for
study by Buchner following an auction in 2009. Other meteorites
have become incorporated into religious worship. The holy Black Stone in
the Kaaba in Mecca is believed to be a stony meteorite. "The Iron
Man statue is the only known illustration of a human figure to be
carved into a meteorite, which means we have nothing to compare it to
when assessing value," said Buchner. "Its origins alone may value
it at $20,000 (15,500 euros). However, if our estimation of its age is
correct and it is nearly a thousand years old it could be invaluable." (AFP)

After originally being presented nearly 2 years ago by Jason Woods, the Kymera
electric powered body board has undergone a series of improvements, and
is nearly set for its official commercial release in 2013. The Kymera electric
powered body board is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack that will
allow the rider to zip across the waves for around an hour, also comes
with a solar charging station to help refuel the board. The electric motor used can speed up to around 18 miles per hour and
Jason is also developing a propane-powered model that would reach up to
25 mph. Retail price for the Kymera is currently set around $5,000, but Woods
hopes that an increase in demand will allow him the opportunity to allow
the price point to $2,000. Watch the Jet Powered Body Board in action

Audi Crosslane Coupe Concept
Audi has
pulled the covers off its new Crosslane Coupé concept, a sporty two-door
crossover that could go to battle with the Mini Paceman if it ever sees
the light of day. As a Q2 perhaps? Built from a combination of
lightweight aluminium and carbon-based materials, the concept was
designed for trendy urban youngsters looking for something that's both
ultra-efficient and fun. It even has a removable roof that allows it to morph into an open-top cruiser. Audi openly admits that the styling of this concept provides a foretaste of what's to come from Audi's Q models. The concept is also a
technological showcase that uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain to achieve
average fuel consumption of just 1.1 litres per 100km and that's without
sacrificing too much in the way of performance. The powertrain consists of a
1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine mated to two electric
motors. The smaller of the two produces 50kW/210Nm and acts primarily as
a starter and alternator while the bigger unit develops 85kW/250Nm and
provides most of the electrical traction. With a system output of
130kW, the little urban mud plugger is credited with an 8.6-second
0-100km/h sprint and a 182km/h top speed. What's more, its CO2 emissions
rating of just 26 g/km makes the Prius look like an pollution factory. The interior is as high-tech as
the rest of the car and most functions can be carried out by steering
wheel controls for the driver's thumbs and the car is always connected
to the worldwide web via social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
It can even send out photos and videos recorded on the road.

"Call Of Duty Black Ops 2" Zombies Reveal Trailer Released
Activision and Treyarch have lifted the lid on three new zombie modes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The first mode is called Tranzit which allows for either solo or
co-op play with up to three additional friends and is set in a “giant,
expansive world” for players to explore. The next mode, Survival, has players killing zombies in just a single
area from the Tranzit world. This will play similar to the previous
zombie modes. The third and final mode is Grief – this lets up to eight players
team up in two teams of four to try and survive the zombies the longest.
While players can’t kill each other, they can block passages or find
other ways to grief the other team, hence the name.

"Lamborghini Perdigon" Concept By Ondrej Jirec
Designing a Lamborghini concept that’s worthy of carrying the
Lamborghini badge is a difficult task – sometimes even for Lamborghini.
So for an independent designer working outside the brand to come up with
something which out crazies the craziest car company of them all is
rare. Step in Ondrej Jirec, a final year Transport Design student at the
Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. His Lamborghini
Perdigón (Pellet in Spanish) [EDIT: The Perdigón is actually
named after a famous fighting bull] is a hyper car concept designed to
compete with the top echelons of the motoring world like the Bugatti
Veyron. The Perdigón concept takes Lamborghini’s stealth jet inspired design
language and turns the dial up to 11. The whole concept features sharp
angles and polygonal surfaces reminiscent of aircraft like the F117
Nighthawk and F22 Raptor. Unusual design elements of the Perdigón
include the large air intake mounted just below the windscreen. This
features a fan-like design on the inside which gives it the appearance
of a jet engine. On the inside the Lamborghini Perdigón concept features a sharply styled
and futuristic cabin which perfectly compliments the exterior. The
high-tech multi-function steering wheel houses a digital display showing
the gear selection, and there’s a couple of buttons and switches thrown
in for good measure. Ahead of this is a small instrument cluster with
the gauges deeply inset into their housings. The high center console not
only allows air to be funneled from the front air intake to the
mid-mounted engine, it also houses what looks like i-Drive inspired
control knobs and leads up to a central infotainment screen mounted
towards the front of the dashboard. The expansive glass canopy of the
concept, which was modeled after fighter jet canopies, is bisected by a
thin bar which runs the length of the roof and windscreen. (DisenoArt)

Hitachi Unveils Glass Slivers That Store Data Forever
As Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones prove, good music lasts a long
time; now Japanese hi-tech giant Hitachi says it can last even longer --
a few hundred million years at least. The company on Monday
unveiled a method of storing digital information on slivers of quartz
glass that can endure extreme temperatures and hostile conditions
without degrading, almost forever. And for anyone who updated
their LP collection onto CD, only to find they then needed to get it all
on MP3, a technology that never needs to change might sound appealing. "The
volume of data being created every day is exploding, but in terms of
keeping it for later generations, we haven't necessarily improved since
the days we inscribed things on stones," Hitachi researcher Kazuyoshi
Torii said. "The possibility of losing information may actually
have increased," he said, noting the life of digital media currently
available -- CDs and hard drives -- is limited to a few decades or a
century at most. And the rapid development of technologies has resulted in frequent changes of data-reading hardware. "As
you must have experienced, there is the problem that you cannot
retrieve information and data you managed to collect," said Torii,
apparently referring to now-obsolete record players and cine films. Hitachi's
new technology stores data in binary form by creating dots inside a
thin sheet of quartz glass, which can be read with an ordinary optical
microscope. Provided a computer with the know-how to understand
that binary is available -- simple enough to programme, no matter how
advanced computers become -- the data will always be readable, Torii
said. The prototype storage device is two centimetres (0.8 inches)
square and just two millimetres (0.08 inches) thick and made from
quartz glass, a highly stable and resilient material, used to make
beakers and other instruments for laboratory use. The chip, which
is resistant to many chemicals and unaffected by radio waves, can be
exposed directly to high temperature flames and heated to 1,000 degrees
Celsius (1,832 Fahrenheit) for at least two hours without being damaged. It is also waterproof, meaning it could survive natural calamities, such as fires and tsunami. "We believe data will survive unless this hard glass is broken," said senior researcher Takao Watanabe. The
material currently has four layers of dots, which can hold 40 megabytes
per square inch, approximately the density on a music CD, researchers
said, adding they believe adding more layers should not be a problem. Hitachi
have not decided when to put the chip to practical use but researchers
said they could start with storage services for government agencies,
museums and religious organisations.

2013 Daihatsu D-R Concept
Japan's Daihatsu has traveled to the 20th Indonesian Motor Show to
display a concept car called D-R. Not yet confirmed for production, the
D-R is billed as a spiritual heir to the Copen roadster that was phased
out earlier this year after a ten year-long production run. The D-R hasn't changed since it made its first public appearance in
Tokyo almost a year ago. Its overall silhouette is reminiscent of the
aforementioned Copen but it features more aggressive styling cues that
put it in line with the brand's recent design language. One of the D-R's most innovative features is that its resin body panels
can be removed and replaced with a different set that gives the
roadster a more sports car-like appearance. On the inside, the uncluttered dashboard features a color touch-screen
for the infotainment system and two combination switches mounted on the
center console that are linked to the vehicle's climate control unit. To further tidy up the appearance, the instrument cluster has been
replaced with a LCD screen that flashes vital information about the car. Considered a kei car in its home country of Japan, the D-R is powered
by a turbocharged two-cylinder gasoline-burning engine with a
displacement of 660cc. Performance figures were not released but the
roadster is said to be fully functional. (leftlanenews)

Multicolor LIFX LED Light Bulbs Can Be Controlled By Smartphone
A new smartbulb has been designed that can easily be controlled with
iOS or Android app and can control the mood of your room or your
entire house.
1 LIFX smartbulb will last 40,000 hours or 25 years and reduce power consumption by up to 20% from conventional bulbs. Phil Bosua, an Australian entrepreneur who lives in Ferny Creek in Melbourne has designed these bulbs. Basua says, "Traditional bulbs also use heaps of power and those energy efficient fluoro bulbs have that cold white light that we all hate". "So I started thinking with all the technology we've got today, surely there must be a better way. I mean it's not like we get up to change the TV anymore, so why do we still do that with our lights? Six months and more than a dozen prototypes later, we've managed to create the world's smartest energy efficient light bulb," he added. LIFX Smartbulbs can be turned off and on and color of the glow can also be changed. One can control multiple bulbs and multiple locations from a single smartphone wirelessly. These bulbs can be programmed to turn on when you arrive home and wake you up gradually glowing brighter. One such bulb will cost $69 while a pair will cost $119 and four bulbs will be available in $196. Expected delivery for the LIFX smartbulb is March 2013.

Spherical Drive Motorcycle Being Developed By Engineering Students
Taking their inspiration from the spherical wheeled Audi RSQ concept seen in the Will Smith film, I, Robot, a group of students at the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering at San Jose State University have created a similar concept, but with just two wheels. Besides
an eco-friendly electric drivetrain, the bike's spherical drive system
is promised to be safer than a traditional motorcycle since the front
wheel can't suddenly turn sideways and jackknife, leading to a crash.
And those giant spherical wheels—made from carbon fiber and fiberglass
covered in industrial rubber—make maneuvering and parking an absolute
breeze since the bike can move sideways just as easily as it can move
forwards and back. The students hope to have the concept fully assembled and running by the end of the year, but whether or not such a design would ever go into production remains to be seen.
