Panasonic's 145-Inch 8K Resolution Plasma TV Debuts
Over in Japan, Panasonic has teamed up with Japanese broadcaster NHK to produce a 145-inch, 8K resolution prototype plasma display.
The super-sized TV is the world's first self-illuminating Super
Hi-Vision TV, meaning it doesn't require a backlight to light up your
entertainment. It also uses a new drive method that scans the pixels
vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality, eliminating
high-resolution flicker. Currently there isn't any content on hand to take full advantage of
the super-high resolution: Hollywood is still struggling to graduate
from 1080p and 2K (2048 × 1080) resolutions to 4K (4096 × 2160). However
NHK has reportedly been experimenting with an 8K image sensor which can
natively output to the team's new prototype. The new drive method helps
to keep the picture rock solid despite the TV's massive size. NHK has reportedly been working on Super Hi-Vision (SHV) for a number
of years. Both Panasonic and NHK developed the monster TV to promote
the research and development of SHV, and plans to film the upcoming
Olympics in this super hi-def mode to show just how sharp and
immersive the experience can be. The duo plans to demo the new tech in
Japan, the United States and the UK starting in May, showcasing images
and videos shot with the NHK 120 FPS 8K sensor. According to the specs, the prototype measures 145-inches, or 1.8m
(L) x 3.2m (H). The actual resolution is 7,680 x 4,320 while the frame
rate resides at a solid at 60 FPS. The pixel pitch is 0.417-mm
horizontal, 0.417-mm vertical, the aspect ratio is 16:9 and the phosphor
array is a RGB vertical stripe. Panasonic stated on Friday that the new 145-inch Super Hi-Vision TV
will make an appearance at the Institute of Technology from May 24 to
May 27, and at the SID International Symposium international conference
from June 3 to June 8. No other dates and locations were provided.

Last Louis Armstrong Trumpet Recordings Released
Louis Armstrong’s final recording was released to the public for the first time Friday and was selling well. The live recording, made on Jan. 29, 1971, just months before
Armstrong’s death, captures the master singing and playing the trumpet
at the National Press Club in Washington, in celebration of fellow
Louisiana native Vernon Louviere’s induction as club president. Because
of ailing health, Armstrong had not performed much in public in the
preceding years. He surprised the Press Club audience when he pulled out
his trumpet, but only for two songs, including “Hello Dolly.” His only
later performances on trumpet were quick snippets on TV. A limited release of 300 LPs was made of the performance at the time, distributed to audience members only.“I
wanted the neighborhood to be proud of their Louis,” he sings in “Boy
from New Orleans” on the recording. "Now all through the years, folks
I've had a ball. Oh, thank you Lord. And I want to thank you all. You
were very kind to old Satchmo... Just a boy from New Orleans."In
retrospect, knowing that it was the end of his life, Ricky Riccardi,
archivist for the Louis Armstrong House Museum, said it does sound like
“one final thank you to the fans who made him what he was.”

Designer Brings The Classic BMW Isetta Into The 21st Century
A new concept has been created based on the classic BMW Isetta microcar
from the 19050’s-60’s. The concept is not from BMW, but was created by
designer Tony Weichselbraun, a graduate of the University of Applied
Arts in Vienna. Dubbed the BMW eSetta, the concept is a full electric car that is
designed as a very modern update of the classic it is based on. “The eSetta is an urban electric vehicle intended as a car sharing
platform,” says Weichselbraun. “It is inductively charged at sharing
hubs, thereby eliminating the unfound fear of limited range through
empty batteries. Its design is inspired by the legendary BMW Isetta. The
front door slides and rotates, allowing passengers to enter and exit
the vehicle via sidewalk. By giving the car a highly recognizable and
friendly appearance, I intended to reinforce the positive aspects of car
sharing.”

better people," says the group. "In the meantime, we wanted to pay

Sweden Puts Ingmar Bergman On Their 200 Kronor Bills!
Sweden's Riksbank on Tuesday released the long-awaited designs of new banknotes featuring the likes of Greta Garbo, Ingmar Bergman, Astrid Lindgren, and other cultural giants of the 20th century. The notes were designed by Göran Österlund, whose colorful "Journey of
Culture" (Kulturresan) design was selected from among eight finalists. Thursday's presentation of the new designs by the Riksbank comes a year
after the bank first announced the six 20th century Swedish icons whose
profiles would grace the new bills. The face of Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman will adorn the new 200
kronor note, while children's author Astrid Lindgren will be the new
face on the 20 kronor note, replacing the popular Selma Lagerlöf. Former United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld will feature on
the 1,000 kronor note, opera singer Birgit Nilsson on the 500 kronor,
film star Greta Garbo on the 100 kronor, and musician Evert Taube on the
50 kronor note. "It's been a difficult but stimulating task to pick a winner. All the
contestants submitted ambitious and well worked suggestions, but in the
end we were captivated by 'The Cultural Journey'," said Peter Egardt, a
member of the Riksbank board of directors and chair of the banknote
design selection jury, in a statement. "The overall impression is a beautiful and user-friendly series of bills
which are built on a well-weighed balance between something new and
Swedish banknote tradition." Österlund explained that his winning design as was meant to "let the
bills take us on a journey from the Öresund Bridge in the south to the
Treriksröset in the north," referencing the "Three Country Cairn" where
the borders of Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. According to the Riksbank, notes bearing the new design are expected to enter general circulation in 2015.

Wind Turbine Blimp Aims To Replace Diesel Generators
A video from Altaeros Energies shows a new vision for powering remote locations. The wind energy startup released a video this week of its prototype airborne wind turbine
during its first test run in Maine earlier this year. The donut-shaped
blimp has a spinning fan at its center, and it's tethered to a base
station by cables that carry electricity from the blimp to the local
grid. The turbine is designed for remote villages or industrial sites where
there isn't grid power and for places such as military outposts that
need to rely on diesel generators. With the machine high in the air, the small wind turbine inside the
helium-filled blimp generates twice the power as pole-mounted turbines,
the company said. That's because winds are stronger and steadier at
higher altitudes. This turbine was tested at 350 feet up. Having done its prototype, the company is currently designing a
commercial system, which would be larger and have a more powerful
turbine, according to Adam Rein at Altaeros Energies. The cost of power
from the airborne wind turbine is more expensive than power from the
grid, but one third the cost of power from diesel generators, he said.
The company is also working on a larger, utility-scale turbine for
offshore wind. The video also shows how the blimp can be automatically deployed and
brought down from its launcher, which is a modified version of launchers
used for industrial blimps. Although there aren't any commercial systems yet, Altaeros Energy joins a
few other companies which are making inflatable turbines or other
devices designed to capture the stronger wind at higher altitudes.

Leonardo Da Vinci Anatomy Drawings To Go On Show
LEONARDO DA VINCI’S original anatomical drawings
are to go on public display for the first time after being hidden away
in a leather-bound album for 300 years. Buckingham Palace is to exhibit the astonishing
“Leoni binding”, a 16th-century leather album which held da
Vinci’s studies of bones, muscles and the heart and brain for three
centuries. The master produced the studies between 1489 and 1513. At his death in 1519 he bequeathed the drawings to his assistant whose son sold them to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni. By
1630 the album was owned by Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel, who
left England in the Civil War. Its existence is next recorded in 1690,
when it was seen at Whitehall Palace in London, in the possession of
William III and Mary II. It is not known how the album entered the Royal Collection, but it was
probably acquired by Charles II during his reign from 1660 to 1685. Curator Martin Clayton said: “For 300 years the binding was effectively the tomb of the drawings.”
