Audi has announced plans to unveil the Sport Quattro Laserlight concept at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show.
The Sport Quattro Laserlight concept is an updated version of the Sport
Quattro concept that debuted last September at the Frankfurt Motor
Show, but as its name suggests, the concept gets new laser headlights. The Sport Quattro Laserlight concept gets headlights that feature
both LED matrix and Laser technology. The laser portion of the
headlights are used for the high-beam function, while the LED matrix
portion is used for the low-beam function. The new laser headlight
provides benefits for designers, since it features a smaller diode size
compared to LEDs, giving designers more flexibility with the headlight
design. The laser headlight also can illuminate the road as far as 1,640
feet, which is twice the range of LEDs. Besides the new headlights, the Audi
Sport Quattro Laserlight concept is nearly identical to the original
concept. The yellow color from the Sport Quattro concept has been
swappwed out by a new Plasma Red exterior color, but under the hood the
same 700 horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain remains unchanged. The
Sport Quattro Laserlight concept is powered by a turbocharged 4.0L V8
that is mated to an electric motor and an eight-speed tiptronic
transmission. The concept can reach 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a
top speed of 190 mph. Audi says that the concept can travel up to 31
miles in electric mode and will average 94 mpg on the European combined
cycle. No word on when a production model will see the light of day, though
Audi executives have confirmed some form of the Sport quattro will come
to fruition in the near future. (imotortimes)
