Oakland riff-metal power-trio High On Fire has been working different variations on the same thundering fast-growl hurtle ever since Matt Pike formed the band in 1998. The band’s new album is called De Vermis Mysteriis, after a fictional book that summons Old Gods and hellbeasts in H.P. Lovecraft books. And it’s got a master behind the boards: Converge’s Kurt Ballou, who’s produced a whole ton of great underground metal albums in recent years. Right now, the entire album is streaming at NPR.
