ThyssenKrupp's "MULTI" Sideways-Moving Elevator Concept

The German engineering firm ThyssenKrupp first announced the idea of a maglev elevator way back in 2014 to a mixture of excitement and disbelief. Now, three years on, it has finally performed its first public test of the technology. “MULTI” is a rope-less horizontal-vertical system that is coming to the real world at an 8070 ft high test tower in Rottweil, Germany. ThyssenKrupp’s technology allows multiple elevator cabins to run in a loop. All it needs is a magnetic levitation to cycle not just one, but multiple cars through a building’s shaft system. The test tower boasts 12 test shafts, with cars that can travel as rapidly as 59 feet per second. The new system is reportedly almost five times more expensive than conventional elevators, so adoption of the new design could take a while. But ThyssenKrupp already has its first customer — The Edge by OVG Real Estate. The “MULTI” system will be installed in its East Side Tower in Berlin, which could be finished by 2019. (hypebeast)

Rado True Stratum Limited Edition

Rado True Stratum, limited to 1,001 pieces, arose from a collaboration with Austrian designer Rainer Mutsch. It has as its signature feature a concave dial with a three-dimensional, step-structured surface and a slightly raised, oblong plate with a yellow-printed Rado logo just right of the center. Matte rhodium-colored hour and minute hands tell the time while a yellow central seconds hand adds a splash of color to the mostly monochrome overall look. A large, perfectly centered black dot, metallized on the underside of the sapphire crystal, casts a shadow over the dial, adding to its sense of depth. Inside the 40-mm-diameter monobloc ceramic case beats the automatic ETA Caliber C07.611, with 25 jewels and an 80-hour power reserve, which is partially visible through a small, oblong window in the caseback that echoes the shape of the logo plate on the dial. The engraved, stepped pattern of the caseback, here also made of PVD-coated titanium, also continues the motif on the dial.  The crown and bracelet are made of black high-tech ceramic. The price: $2,200.

Toshihiko Hosaka's Incredible Sand Sculptures

Toshihiko Hosaka began making sand sculptures in art school and has been using beaches and sand boxes as his canvas for almost 20 years. His work defies what we typically think of as sand art as he sculpts and carves the loose, granular substance as if it were some malleable form of clay. There is no core, mold or adhesive ever used throughout the process: just sand. The only trick Hosaka uses (and this is commonly accepted) is a hardening spray applied to his sculpture only after it’s been completed, in order to prevent wind and sun from eroding it for a few days. Hosaka competed in the Fulong International Sand Sculpture Art Festival along with 22 other international professional sand sculptors. The theme for the contest was “Hero” and Hosaka spent 3 days sculpting a figure of Musashi Miyamoto, which was awarded 1st prize on May 6th. Hosaka depicted the 16th century expert Japanese swordsman seated down in a calm position, sword tucked under his belt. (thisiscolossal)
