Volkswagen Aqua Hovercraft Concept

The Volkswagen Aqua is a hovercraft concept designed by 21-year old Chinese designer Yuhan Zhang, who recently graduated from Xihua University with honors in Industrial Design. The concept base was to create a vehicle that would handle all types of terrains, as part of the Cars Design Awards China, with a simple brief: “Chinese off-road vehicle by Volkswagen”. Like most hovercrafts, the Aqua uses multiple engines: the first one inflates the skirt around the vehicle and is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, and four more individual electric engines power the fans that move the vehicle.

Renault Twizy F1 Concept

Renault has turned its Renault Twizy electric city car into a quasi-Formula 1 car. The Twizy Renaultsport F1 concept car uses a Renault F1-supplied KERS to match the 0-62mph time of 6.0sec of Renault’s fastest road car, the Renaultport Mégane 265. The concept is a strict one-off for now and is the result of a collaboration between Renaultsport and Renaultsport F1 engineers. It is designed to show that F1 technology can filter down to road cars, through the integration of a KERS in the Twizy that exactly mirrors that of those fitted to Renault-powered F1 cars. The 30kg-in-weight KERS system features an electric motor, lithium-ion batteries and a control unit. It is fitted in place of the rear seat in the Twizy (the concept thus being a one-seater) and is grafted onto the Twizy’s original 17bhp electric motor. Energy lost under braking is recovered by the KERS and stored in the battery. When fully charged, an extra 79bhp is on tap for the Twizy F1. The deceleration forces are nowhere near as great in the Twizy F1 as in a single-seat race car, so the KERS has been adapted to also draw power from the Twizy’s main electric motor so the KERS boost is always available. When the ‘Boost’ mode is selected from the Twizy F1’s Formula Renault 3.5 race car-inspired steering wheel (Recover mode is the other option), its top speed is 68mph at a maximum 10,000rpm. This is much lower than the 36,000rpm the KERS motor runs at, so a special reducer gear is fitted between the motors to ensure they synchronise. The Twizy F1 weighs 564kg, some 91kg more than a standard Twizy. But the addition of the KERS system has dramatically improved the power-to-weight ratio, the Twizy F1 offering 1bhp per 5.8kg versus the standard Twizy’s 1bhp per 25kg. The Twizy F1’s power-to-weight ratio compares favourably to the 1bhp per 5.2kg of the RS Mégane 265. The Twizy F1 has been fitted with an extravagant bodykit to fit its name. Included are large front and rear wings, side pods, a rear diffuser with an F1-style rain light and side pods. The yellow and black paintwork is reminiscent of Renault’s past F1 liveries. Renaultsport engineers undertook the chassis tuning, and ensured the rear-drive Twizy could cope with an extra 79bhp. (autocar)

The MusicMachine By MB&F And Reuge

Hodinkee gives us a look at one incredible feat of engineering, The MusicMachine by MB&F and Reuge. The haute horology company teamed up with Reuge, a centuries old manufacturer of music boxes who helped add the necessary and whimsical element to a piece that simply looks out of this world. And no, don't expect any classical orchestrations or Swan Lake, this one plays the Star Wars theme, the Imperial March, the Star Trek theme, Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall, John Lennon's Imagine, and Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Check out the video below.

De Bethune DB25 Imperial Fountain Limited Edition

In a few days at Baselworld 2013 De Bethune will represent DB25 Imperial Fountain, a new special edition of sets of 12 timepieces. Inspired by the bronze Zodiac Animal Heads which adorned an ornate fountain in the famous Yuanming Yuan (Old Summer Palace) outside of Beijing, China, these beautiful watches feature elaborately engraved animal heads for the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols. Each of the 12 animals heads, engraved by master artist Michèle Rothen using the bas relief technique, is in the middle of the dial of its watch, backed by a Grand Feu enamel relief of the corresponding Zodiac symbol. New techniques, such as the use of micro ball bearings and a new transmission system capable of driving the revolving disks, was developed specifically for this movement. This new movement uses the De Bethune trademark Silicon/white gold balance wheel and balance spring with flat terminal curve, as well as the company’s patented triple parechute shock absorbing system. The movement has 287 parts and a power reserve of six days. The fountain in the Palace of the Calm Seas of the Yuanming Yuan, built in the mid- 1700s and created by French and Italian Jesuits and Chinese artisans (for the Qianlong Emperor of China), was actually a huge hydraulic water-clock (clepsydra), with water jetting from the mouths of the appropriate animal head to announce the time. Due to looting and the ravages of time, the Yuanming Yu an is in ruins now, and only seven of the original 12 Zodiac heads have been found. The Zodiac heads are a powerful symbol for the Chinese, and the subject of much discussion, both inside and outside of China. Recently, famous Chinese artist/provocateur Ai Wei Wei created his Circle of Animals (in bronze and in gold), inspired by the fountain’s Animal Heads, to great international acclaim. (athenna)

Hydroptere – The World’s Fastest Sailboat

The world’s fastest sailboat is about to set sail on a voyage to claim the transpacific speed record for a wind-powered vessel. The Hydroptere sailboat is a marvel of engineering and materials technology, using a carbon composite and titanium frame design that floats up to 15 feet above the water. To reduce water drag and improve its aerodynamic shape, Hydroptere features a primary central foil and a pair of wings on either side that raise the ship above the surface at cruising speed. At full sail, the Hydroptere can reach speeds of up to 52 mph, a blinding speed for a sail-driven craft. The Hydroptere is planning to further its claim as the world’s fastest sailboat on a record-setting transpacific voyage. It will be traveling from Los Angeles to Honolulu with support ships in the hopes of setting a new high mark for its class.  Hydroptere is currently in Paris, undergoing preparations for its record-setting voyage at the architecture workshop of Jean Nouvel. It will set out in the weeks ahead under the leadership of Alain Thébault, Jean Le Cam and Yves Parlier.

Introducing The Virtuix Omni VR Treadmill

Joysticks could be a thing of the past: Virtuix will soon debut an omni-directional treadmill that can track gamers as they run, walk, and jump in every direction. The device — aptly dubbed the Omni — can be used on its own to replace traditional video game movement controls, or it can be used alongside other virtual reality hardware, including the Oculus Rift, for a more encompassing VR experience. The company has shown off support for games including Crysis Warhead, Team Fortress 2, and Skyrim in a series of YouTube videos, but the device will work with all PC games when it's released. Virtuix is aiming to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the Omni around the end of May or the beginning of June, and it's targeting a price of $400-600 for the device, a company representative told The Verge. The Omni does not appear to use a moving belt like a traditional treadmill, and instead looks to employ a slick, sloped surface that users slide down as they take steps forward. Virtuix has also demonstrated integration with the Oculus Rift, which allows players to use the Omni in 360-degrees. The treadmill integration could resolve a virtual reality gaming issue that Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR, discussed during this year's SXSW Interactive. Quick movement can become disorienting while using the Oculus Rift, and Luckey pointed out that an omni-directional treadmill could solve that. "With a little bit of prediction and misdirection you can make people feel like they’re in an infinite space," he said. (theverge)

Italdesign Giugiaro Parcour Promo Video Released

Italian design and engineering company Italdesign Giugiaro has released a video of its Lamborghini-based ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour all-terrain supercar. Powered by a 410kW/540Nm 5.2-litre mid-engined V10 borrowed from the Lamborghini Gallardo thanks to the company’s long relationship with the raging bull’s owner Volkswagen Group, the ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour is not only capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, but also claims to be “suitable for any terrain”. Designed, engineered and produced in Moncalieri, Italy, the two-seat four-wheel-drive Parcour is fitted with a dashboard-mounted control device that allows drivers to alter the car to its surroundings through four different settings: Comfort, Off-road, Ice and Track. With each alternate setting, the electronic system modifies the car’s ride, engine set-up, and height – the latter varying from 210mm to 330mm. ItalDesign Giugiaro vice president, and son of co-founder Giorgetto Guigiaro, Fabrizio Giugiaro says the Parcour features the same characteristics as its namesake outdoor activity based around movement, parkour. “Parkour was devised as a new way of living and experiencing a metropolitan route creatively. “Parkour enthusiasts, who are referred to as traceurs or plotters, adapt their body to the surrounding environment pursuing, through their movements, not just spectacle but instead mainly maximum efficiency. The purpose of parkour is to move around as efficiently as possible. By efficiently I mean simply, quickly and safely, which are characteristic features of our car.” Presented in both coupe and roadster body styles, the ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour concept was one of the big surprises of last month’s 2013 Geneva motor show.
