Ducati has resurrected the SuperSport
model name with the introduction of a 2017 model featuring the same
combination of real-world performance and sporty styling. Whereas the original SuperSport models traditionally used air-cooled Desmodue engines, the new SuperSport receives the 937cc Testastretta 11-degree engine from the Hypermotard line. The liquid-cooled engine makes 113 horsepower and 71 foot-pounds of torque, and is housed in a Ducati-trademark trellis frame. As with the earlier SuperSport models, the new version takes styling
cues from the current Superbike lineup, with a distinct resemblance to
the Panigale models. However, ergonomics are more relaxed to make the
bike more suitable for medium-distance riding, and the seat height is
lower at 31.9 inches. To further increase comfort, the windscreen is
adjustable with two positions and 50mm of travel. The 937cc engine is similar to the liquid-cooled 11-degree
Testastretta mill used in the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada models, but
features a redesigned crankcase and cylinder heads to make the engine a
fully stressed member of the trellis frame, a re-routing of coolant
through the cylinder heads, and the addition of a new gear sensor. The
ride-by-wire throttle and gear sensor allow the addition of an up/down
Ducati Quick Shift system, as well as three riding modes, the Ducati
Safety Pack with Bosch 9MP ABS and Ducati Traction Control. Two versions of the new bike will be available. The base SuperSport
is offered with a fully adjustable 41mm Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock
adjustable for preload and rebound damping, whereas the SuperSport S is
equipped with fully adjustable Ohlins suspension front and rear. The S
model also benefits from the addition of the Ducati up/down Quick Shift
system and a rear seat cover, which are both available as accessories
for the base model. MSRP for the base SuperSport is $12,995, while the
SuperSport S retails for $14,795. (sportrider)
