Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing At Bonneville

There are many ways to enjoy your toys, from driving, to racing, to keeping them in a collection, there are various avenues to gaining pleasure from what you own. For Bob Sirna, this comes from racing at the salt flats of Bonneville. Many different types of cars run at Bonneville, but Bob chooses a car that you wouldn't ever expect to be racing, let alone down a strip of metal-eating salt: a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. Now fetching over a million dollars, the 300SL is a car that you mainly see at a concourse or in a museum — not trying to break land speed records at Speed Week. For the last 12 years Bob has been bringing his Gullwing to the salt in an effort to break records and cure his "salt fever." (petrolicious)

As usual, players and spectators at the basketball court were told only that they would be filmed for a "basketball documentary" -- what they really got were front row seats for some serious Old Man Magic.

Concept 1865 Electric Bike

German design studio Ding3000 has used a nineteenth-century velocipede cycle as the model for this plastic electric bicycle. Ding3000 collaborated with chemical company BASF to create the Concept 1865 prototype bike, combining various plastics into a contemporary interpretation of an early bicycle. BASF was founded in 1865, the year pedals were added to German inventor Karl Drais' wooden Dandy Horse velocipede bicycle, so this provided the starting point for the new design. Pedals attach directly to the centre of the front wheel, which is much larger than the supporting back wheel. The electric motor is concealed beneath a blue disk on the back wheel, designed to protect it from water, dirt and stone chips. An angular seat protrudes from the long part of the frame, which connects the handlebars to the rear wheel. The battery is located in the seat, which can be detached and carried away with a handle so no one can ride off on the bike when its left unattended. The same graphic pattern used over the seat padding is found on the tyre treads and handlebar grips. Other details include pedals without bearings and LEDs integrated into the sections of frame located either side of both wheels. (dezeen)

World's Strongest Beer, "Snake Venom," Clocks In At 67.5% ABV

Scottish brewery Brewmeister released Snake Venom, which they describe as “the world’s strongest beer.” It boasts an impressive 67.5% ABV (alcohol by volume), which is very high considering beers are typically under ten percent. Just last year Brewmeister created the Armageddon, their previous strongest beer, which contained 65% ABV. Snake Venom is available to purchase online and ships internationally from The Real Ale Company. "Contains special ingredients to achieve such a high volume of alcohol including smoked peat malt and two types of yeast: beer yeast and champagne yeast. Unlike Armageddon, Snake Venom is not designed to mask the taste of the alcohol. The alcohol is very strong but the beer still tastes like a beer rather than a spirit. It’s hoppy, malty and very pleasant. Snake Venom is so strong that we have put a warning label on the neck of the bottle warning drinkers to beware."

Sierra Leone Drivers' Test To Include Playing Board Game?

Sierra Leone has launched a new policy aimed at curbing road accidents that kill hundreds every year - a board game that anyone seeking a driving license must buy and play before being allowed on the roads. Competitors move models of classic cars around the board after rolling traffic light-themed dice. Their cars must negotiate obstacles like "vehicle tests" that result in fines if a windscreen is broken or insurance is out of date. Players must also answer questions on road laws. "It will help a lot," said Morie Lenghor, Assistant Inspector General of the police and the game's creator. "Most crashes here are a result of ignorance of the highway code. And most drivers don't even understand half the road signs. "I realized that a lot of people don't like reading much, but what if I can put the highway code in a game that is attractive to young people?" The Drivers' Way is manufactured in India and costs 60,000 Leones, about US$14. Three thousand copies have already been imported. "It's played a bit like Scrabble," said Sarah Bendu, Executive Director of Sierra Leone's Road Transport Authority and an avid player of the game. "They (novice drivers) will have to pay for it. Then they will play it for two or three months, or maybe just one if they're smart enough, then they will come for their test." There are plans for an online version which will be marketed throughout West Africa. Balogun Koroma, Sierra Leone's transport minister, said the game was a "light-hearted way for people to learn road signs". Driving in Sierra Leone is often reckless, vehicles poorly maintained and roads severely degraded in many areas. The country has no working traffic lights. More than 380 people were killed in 2,204 registered road accidents in Sierra Leone last year. Many drivers say they never had to take a test. "If you have the money it's easy," said an official in the car-hire industry. "Most people here do not take tests". (reuters)

Metallica To Play Antarctica

Metallica have confirmed that they are set to play a gig in Antarctica. The metal band's performance will take place inside a dome at the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on December 8 and the audio will be transmitted to the crowd through headphones. The audience will be made up of competition winning fans from Latin America, who will travel on an Antarctic cruise from December 3-10, stopping at Carlini for the gig. It will be the second ever gig staged on the continent, following a performance in 2007 from a group of musical scientists, called Nunatak, at British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Research Station as part of the Live Earth climate change awareness concerts. Writing at Metallica.com, the band said: "We'll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification... a real first for us! The show will also be streamed live for our friends in those Latin American countries who cannot join us at the base and filmed to share with everyone at a later date." The concert is being put on in conjunction with Coca Cola Zero, who are running the competition for tickets, which you can enter if you live in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica or Mexico. The contest opens on October 28, when you will be able to click here for more information. (nme)

Clive Barker To Write "Hellraiser" Remake With Doug Bradley Returning As Pinhead

A remake of Clive Barker's horror classic Hellraiser is back on track and fans should be pleased to learn that it is being developed by Barker himself. What's more, Doug Bradley will be back as Pinhead! The official announcement was posted to the filmmaker's Facebook page (via ShockTillYouDrop) and reads as follows: HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch. What can I tell you about it? Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed, I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing. I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here ,because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent ,me. My very best wishes to you all,my friends. Clive. Originally released in 1987, Hellraiser was followed by eight different sequels, the first two of which featured Barker as producer. (comingsoon)

The Japanese Love Industry

Japan is a country that is dying—literally. Japan has more people over the age of 65 and the smallest number of people under the age of 15 in the world. It has the fastest negative population growth in the world, and that's because hardly anyone is having babies. In these difficult times, the Japanese are putting marriage and families on the back burner and seeking recreational love and affection as a form of cheap escape with no strings attached.

Honda S660 Concept Revealed

Set to debut at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show, the Honda S660 Concept previews the carmaker’s mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive roadster that will likely be billed as the spiritual successor to the original S600 of the Sixties. Resembling the 2011 EV-Ster concept, the S660 Concept swaps the electric powertrain for a 660 cc turbocharged three-pot rated at 64 hp and is aimed at Japan’s Kei car market. By the time it reaches the Japanese market in 2015, the S660 Concept will gain a fully retractable roof, remaining largely unchanged otherwise. In Europe, Honda is considering more powerful engines. A 1.0-liter turbo with over 100 hp is being rumored, which should be ample for a 900 kg roadster. Reports also suggest the concept could emerge as the revised Honda Beat, a car the manufacturer recently confirmed would be reinvented for the modern age. The S660 is believed to be the smallest of a new three-car lineup, with the new Honda NSX at the top and a Toyota GT86 rival sitting in the middle. (carbuzz)

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster Unveiled

Lamborghini has officially revealed the Veneno Roadster, following yesterday’s leak. It represents another ultra-exclusive model part of the company's 50th anniversary celebrations and will be built in a limited quantity of nine units, with a pre-tax starting price of 3.3M EUR (approximately 4.5M USD or 2.79M GBP. Although you'll be paying this exorbitant price tag, don't expect to receive a roof since the car only comes with a rollover bar for added stability. Described by Lamborghini as an "open racing prototype", the Veneno Roadster is powered by the same Aventador-derived V12 6.5-liter engine taken from the coupe version which pumps out 750 HP (552 kW) channeled to all four wheels via an ISR transmission with five selectable modes. This hardware setup enables the high-performance roadster to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.9 seconds before topping out at 220 mph (355 km/h). It tips the scales at only 1,490 kg (3,278 lbs) which results in a power-to-weight ratio of 1.99 kg/bhp (4.38 lbs/bhp). The lower curb weight is the result of a lightweight design with a carbon fiber monocoque and CFRP exterior body parts, while the cabin is also mostly made from carbon fiber. Aside from the absence of a roof it boasts the same eccentric design as the coupe which some have considered to be a bit too much, even for an exclusive Lamborghini. The Italian supercar maker (and soon to be SUV builder) has announced production of the nine cars will commence in 2014. (worldcarfans)

Skully P1 Heads-Up Display Motorcycle Helmet

Using GPS on a motorcycle usually involves looking down at a portable navigation device on the handlebars, but Skully Helmets wants to update that experience. The company developed the Skully P1 motorcycle helmet, which gives riders a heads-up display and integrates not only GPS, but a rear-view camera, hands-free phone system, and voice command. According to Skully's press materials, the display is not in the rider's primary field of vision, and appears as if it were floating 6 meters ahead. The helmet runs a modified version of the Android operating system, which comes loaded with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. With the helmet paired to a smartphone through Bluetooth, the rider can use voice command to make phone calls and start music playback. The heads-up display can also show the image from an integrated rear-view camera. Skully notes that this camera has a 180 degree field of vision, so the rider can also see when it is safe to change lanes. Skully will show off the P1 helmet this week at the Demo 2013 conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The company did not say when the helmet would become available, or list a retail price. Soft Light By Simon Frambach

German design student Simon Frambach created this lamp that challenges your perceptions of what a lamp should be and do. It functions just like any other lamp except that its shade is made of soft foamed polyurethane, so it feels more like a pillow than a traditional lampshade. “The idea of designing a lamp, that is altered completely in its functionality only through its untypical and odd surface has been the first point of interest for me. To me it is fascinating how one little alteration (the softness) can really change the whole concept of a product that surrounds us.”
