Mike Tyson Heading To Broadway

Mike Tyson wants his next knockout to be on Broadway. The former boxing champ announced that he will team up with director Spike Lee to bring his one-man show, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, to a Nederlander-owned theatre. The show, a raw confessional on the highs and lows of the life of the retired heavyweight and tabloid target, made its debut in April at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It will mark Lee’s debut as a Broadway director. Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in 1986 when he won his title as a 20-year-old. His life since then has been marred by accusations of domestic violence, rape and drug use.

Rare Stolen Swedish Atlas Recovered At NYC Gallery

A 415-year-old atlas stolen from Sweden's Royal Library more than a decade ago was recovered in the United States and has been returned to the Scandinavian country, officials said Wednesday.
The Cornelius van Wytfliet atlas, which contains 19 rare maps, vanished alongside 55 other books, a theft later attributed to the former head of the library's manuscript department, Anders Burius, who committed suicide in 2004. "We could not be more pleased to know that this national treasure is finally making its way home," said Gunilla Herdenberg, a library representative, calling the atlas "an irreplaceable piece of the library's collection and Sweden's cultural heritage." The work had belonged to the Royal Library for 300 years when it disappeared. Library officials say the piece is the first printed atlas solely devoted to depicting maps of North and South America and includes the first printed map of California. Officials were alerted to its whereabouts when they noticed it was being offered for sale by New York's Arader Galleries in June 2011, who had purchased the piece at Sotheby's auction house in London, according to the law office of Herrick, Feinstein LLP hired by the library to help retrieve the work. Upon discovery of its origins, the Arader Galleries returned the atlas to Sotheby's, who subsequently restituted it to Sweden. Most of the other missing works were sold in the 1990s by a German auction house.

Supersonic Jet To Fly From London To Sydney In Four Hours

Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Gulfstream - with the help of NASA - are working towards the first supersonic commercial passenger airliner, aimed initially at the business jet market.  "The fact that the big boys are all close confirms industry rumours that a new generation of supersonic planes is now, finally, within reach," a Gulfstream engineer told the Sunday Times. All three companies claim they are close to overcoming what was Concorde’s biggest obstacle - the ‘sonic boom’ which rolls in the jet’s wake. The aircraft will create a sound described by the engineer as “closer to a puff or plop”. The design will be sketched out at next month's Farnborough air show in London along with other supersonic prototypes, say show executives. "Lighter composite materials, more advanced engines and smaller fuselages could enable new jets to travel about twice as fast as Concorde, which flew at up to 2187 km/h" says The Sunday Times. "The jets will carry passengers at speeds in excess of 4000 km/h, allowing them to cruise in luxury from London to Sydney, just over 16,000km away" in four hours. The jet, codenamed X-54, wouldn’t fly until after 2020, which means a full-sized jet could be available by 2030, assuming the new technology was reliable and successful. The sonic boom was the major factor that prevented Concorde from ever being developed beyond an expensive experimental aircraft. It flew for the last time in November 2003.

Digitally Assembled Paintings By Russ Mills

Artist Russ Mills created digital art pieces by constructing portraits digitally mastered to combine components of several different drawings and paintings. These complex and interesting creations portray the essence of human nature and emotion in a style that combines techniques of traditional fine art with hints of urban flare and chaos. Mills refers to his pieces as painting disasters which seem to come to life with the creative digital manipulation combining techniques that would otherwise be difficult to put together. It all comes together to form a cohesive and effective art collection.[via thisiscolossal]

SeaOrbiter Project To Become A Reality

The experimental research ship Sea Orbiter has been given the full go ahead with the futuristic $43 million ship set to hit the waves as early as next year. The 50m high research ship will utilise technologies from solar power to wind turbines and is completely self-sustainable. Originally the brainchild of French designer Jacques Rougerie the SeaOrbiter is unique as a vessel in that nearly 50 per cent of its mass is actually underwater allowing for constant interaction with the ocean. Above the waterline however is the majority of the fin-like hull housing living-quarters, research labs and of course the observation deck and bridge. With partners like Microsoft already on board the Sea Orbiter is likely to be more suited to a science fiction film than reality and with it's entirely unique design it's hard not to be impressed.

Original Hawkwind Bassist John Harrison Dead At 69

Hawkwind’s original bassist, John Harrison, has passed away. Harrison appeared on the band’s debut album before leaving in July 1970. Cleopatra Records has issued a statement, saying: “With great sadness we wish to announce that John Harrison, founding bassist for legendary space rock band Hawkwind, passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2012. John had been suffering from Huntington disease, having been diagnosed with it in 2005. At the time of his death, John was being cared for at Garden Crest clinic in Los Angeles. His caregivers there reported that he passed peacefully at approximately 8 p.m. John would have been 70 on May 28. “John’s throbbing and inventive bass parts on the band’s self-titled 1970 release laid the foundation for Hawkwind’s influential sound, both then and now. After his departure from the band, John also worked successfully as a producer and staff engineer at Village Recorders in Los Angeles.” Former Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton added in a statement: “John was an integral part of Hawkwind’s formation and eventual success. His honest, solid character and playing held the whole thing together in that first year of the group’s existence (in more ways than one)! All who worked with him and have followed in his footsteps, i.e. Lemmy :) and all Hawkfans, old and young, wherever you are, owe him big-time! May he rock in peace wherever he is now!”

Hideo Kojima Confirms Metal Gear Solid 5

Hideo Kojima has confirmed development on Metal Gear Solid 5, revealing some scant details on the game and hinting that Solid Snake’s story is not yet over. “There will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 with the new FOX Engine,” said Kojima (via the magic of Google Translate), “but what we’ve shown was not gameplay, or anything like that. It was only a demo that we had developed internally and released because the lighting and interactions with the environment had fooled everyone.” “About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things,” Kojima continued. “There will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you “a favor” like in the last Metal Gear Solid.  “I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, I will be carved up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5.” Kojima also mentioned Metal Gear Rising and pointed to Solid Snake’s future. “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance never claimed to be a Metal Gear Solid. This is not a game about our beloved Solid Snake. It is a spinoff that tries something different. We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots,” he said. Platforms for Metal Gear Solid 5 are yet to be revealed. The previous title in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, was a PS3-exclusive. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, meanwhile, is multiplatform. Make of that what you will.

Aston Martin Reveals The New Vanquish

Aston Martin has revealed its replacement for the DBS – and it’s called the Vanquish. The previous Vanquish broke new ground in terms of design and technology in 2001, and this latest version aims to make a similar impact with its new design, carbon body and 565bhp 6.0-litre V12. The Vanquish is the first in a new generation of Astons, so the exterior and interior have been completely redesigned. “Aston Martin is all about evolving something until it’s perfect,” said design director Marek Reichman. The classic Aston grille has been trimmed to sit above a front splitter. Long side strakes, deep side sills and sculpted haunches create an elegant profile, while an integrated spoiler, diffuser and tail-lights inspired by the One-77 finish off the rear. By using an all-carbon body, Aston has saved around 6kg, and made intricate parts such as the spoiler possible. “Ask anyone in manufacturing if they can make that [in aluminium] and they’d say it can’t be done. But carbon enables us to,” said Reichman. Inside, the dash’s ‘waterfall’ theme is taken from the One-77, and features mobile phone-style touchscreen buttons that vibrate when pushed. A new infotainment system controls the sat-nav, B&O stereo and Bluetooth phone connection on one screen. The dash is moved forward to give extra room – although the rear seats are as cramped as ever. (You can order a two-seater version) at no extra cost. Boot space is up by 60 per cent to 368 litres. The 6.0-litre V12 engine has been rebuilt with a new block, variable valve timing and a larger intake manifold. The result is 565bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds – 55bhp more and two tenths faster than the DBS. Fuel economy has yet to be confirmed, but expect a slight improvement, despite the power boost. To sharpen the handling, the engine is lowered by 19mm, the six-speed ZF gearbox has been recalibrated for 37 per cent faster shifts in Sport mode, while the steering rack has a quicker ratio of 15:1. The VH platform – which has underpinned every Aston except the Cygnet since the DB9 in 2004 – is now in its fourth generation and has received significant upgrades. The chassis is still bonded aluminium, but carbon fibre is used for elements such as the boot floor, and torsional stiffness has been improved by 20 per cent. A lighter engine, front subframe and exhaust system, as well as the carbon-fibre body, have reduced weight by at least 40kg, too. The new Vanquish is priced at £189,995, with first deliveries due to reach customers early next year.

Rob Zombie To Direct Hockey Drama "Broad Street Bullies"

Rob Zombie will write, direct and produce “Broad Street Bullies,” a film about the mid-1970's Stanley Cup winning Flyers, reports Deadline.com. Zombie, the former White Zombie musician who became a successful horror filmmaker with “House Of 1000 Corpses” and “Halloween,” tells the website that he has the rights to the Flyers story and the full support of the Flyers organization. “The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale,” Zombie told Deadline.com’s Mike Fleming. “The great Rob Zombie making a drama feature film about the Broad Street Bullies is exciting and thrilling for all of us! I look forward to seeing it,” said Flyers great and team exec Bobby Clarke when contacted by Deadline.com. Last year HBO debuted an hourlong documentary film also using the "Broad Street Bullies" name.
